Egan 2024.01 - Top Performers
In his Egan debut, Matthew took the rider of the day with PRs on all 7 segments. Rachel Huang claimed the women’s GC while Jack Liu - thanks to his backpack full of helium - took the men’s GC.
We have liftoff! Starting things off on the right pedal, we had 98 riders racking up 280 PRs. What a crowd! Not wanting Chloe to miss out on the suffering fun, the B-group kindly waited before launching off. Dirk humbled the A-group by showing what it means to leave it all on the road.

Egan 2024.01 - Prepare for Launch!
That wonderful time of year has come at last: EGAN SEASON IS HERE! Last year the rain stymied the launch for several weeks so this year in true Dirk fashion keep your middle fingers raised to the clouds and we’ll see what happens. We are tentatively targeting this coming Tuesday, March 12 at 6:00pm for the official launch of the 2024 Egan Season. As usual, we’ll see how the weather develops as we get closer to Tuesday and will cancel the ride if the conditions deteriorate.
After the ride we’ll all meet at State of Mind in Los Altos for a post-ride social. The first round of pizza is on Alto Velo!

The Climbing Ride,February 25 - The Bohlman and the On Orbit
The time has come,' the Ride Leader said,
To ride up many things.
With shoes — and cleats — and sealant leaks —
With cups — and KOMs.
Ask why my legs are boiling hot —
And whether Bohlman is worse than On Orbit.'
But wait a bit,' the Riders cried,
Before we have our climb;
For some of us are out of breath,
And all of us are fat!'

The Climbing Ride, January 28 - Questionable Decisions in the North
The weatherman says it’s going to be a beautiful day. My legs say otherwise; between illness and winter doldrums I’m way out of shape. This week is your chance to say “I beat Dirk up all the hills”. Come on out and watch me whine, complain, and suffer through the rich neighborhoods of San Carlos, Belmont and San Mateo.

Important message from the Egan Leadership
Dear Egan Rider,
Wishing you a joyous holiday season with your friends and family! This marks a crucial period for Egan & Alto Velo. It's vital to renew your AV membership by December 18th for several reasons:

Egan, as AV's outreach program, embraces openness and inclusivity:
Egan rides are open to all, no AV membership required.

AV membership costs vary to accommodate all financial abilities.
Exercise your right to vote.
Details on Egan members running for the board will be revealed soon.
As a token of appreciation, Egan riders renewing AV membership by 12/18 enjoy an EARLY ordering window for the stylish new Egan kit.
Thank you for being part of our vibrant cycling community.

2023 Egan Bonus & Banquet Recap
The 2023 Egan season officially came to a close with a banquet at SoM (State of Mind) in Los Altos. Beforehand, a small group rode the infamous and beloved “5 ways to the 4 corners” that is always guaranteed to induce hunger and a need for liquid refreshment afterwards.
Unofficial results: https://route-viewer.vercel.app/results/egan-2023-bonus
While we can’t wait until the 2024 Egan season begins (on March 12, 2024), we’re considering doing more “unofficial” Egan rides to tide us over the next 6 months. Stay tuned for future ride announcements.
2023 Egan End of Season Banquet and Bonus Pre-Party Ride
Well here it is folks, the official end of the Egan 2023 season. This year we’ll celebrate a little differently by doing a short and sweet pre-party ride, then head to State of Mind (SOM) for some real heat and sweet pizza. The route should take about an hour, so we’ll plan on starting the banquet by 6:30PM. Feel free to join the ride or just show up at SOM for the banquet and start squatting at the tables in the parking lot. We can’t make reservations so we need to start occupying the tables as we arrive.
Pre-Party Ride meets at 4:50 and leaves at 5PM from the Los Altos Chamber of Commerce

Egan 2023.25 & 26 Top Performers
Rider of the day was Rachel Hwang with PRs on all 7 segments and top placement in the women’s GC. Gavin Hlady took top honors for the men.
The 2023 Egan finalé had 114 riders, some dressed in costume, racking up 365 PRs and respirating under smoky atmospheric conditions with AQI in the mid-100s. While the ride was short, it had a sweet ending with ice cream and popsicles served at the top of Madonna Way, thanks to Gina Yuan and Sue-Lin Holt!

Due to a technical glitch that messed up the results for Egan 2023.25 (more about that below), the results now include all riders, not just those who are in the Egan Strava club. Going forward, we’ll probably calculate the results in this way.

Egan 2023.26 - The Season Finale (Egan Women meet at 5:40pm)
Weep ye bitter tears, for the season of Eganing is coming to an end. This Tuesday we will be riding the traditional First and Last Route with Jerome’s favorite pop singer addition (Madonna!). It’s short, but that just means you can go harder on each segment; we expect to see many PRs and cups, and hopefully a few crowns. Your efforts could be rewarded with some tasty treats at the end, but only if you go full gas and have something crazy on you (like a panda helmet) or your bike (pink tassels)!

A perfect follow-up to last week’s sprint route, it was endurance night with 8 longer segments and only one of them under a minute. That didn’t stop 78 riders from racking up 281 PRs on the ride.

Egan 2023.23 - Moody Blues
Egan Riders,
Got the Moody Blues? If last week’s ‘Le Puncheur’ big ring sprinters route got you down, then this week’s route is aimed to please all the endurance climbers in the group. Noting that last week there was only one segment over a minute, this week has only one segment under a minute. Don’t attack the beginning of each segment unless you enjoy and can endure that lactate acid buildup in your legs!

Egan 2023.22 - Top Performers
Gina Yuan was the rider of the day with 10 PRs, 6 Top 10s, 2 QOMs and top GC honors (just ahead of Robin). Gavin led the men’s GC behind Yann who was taking a nap on the Stirrup Wall. Hannon finished 3rd because he could not find his front derailleur since we cut off his cable.
It was a puncheur’s night with over 79 riders, 489 PRs and 4 KOM/QOMs. There is no doubt that Egan is the most popular ride in the Bay Area! Why is Egan so popular? Egan is not a structured workout nor a café ride. I came to the conclusion that Egan is a ”show on two wheels” where both racers and weekend riders join to defy gravity at sunset.
Yesterday’s BIG ring show was super fun with 12 short segments (with KOMs less than 1 minute except one). Simon had so much fun that he repeated the Boronda View Sprint twice (see video below).

Also kudos to Tanner and Zack for completing the University Road Race 2023 in Cat 4-5. It was a brutal scorching day to complete 15 laps of this circuit.

Egan 2023.22 - Le Puncheur
Eganeers,
It is time for another repeat from last year! We will celebrate your BIG ring so we will do only SHORT sprints, but a lot of them! We will squeeze in as many as time allows. It will be easier so you do not have to “sandbag” your efforts on a small ring. Count the number of climbs you do on a big ring and post it on your Strava feed. Extra bonus if you climb Horseshoe Ct on a big ring.
Leaders: The usual suspects!

Egan 2023.21 - Top Performers
Rider of the day was Salvatore T. (for the second week in a row!) with PRs on all 9 segments. Gina Yuan took the woman’s GC with a commanding lead and Hannon Ayer took top spot for the men. And congrats to the all the riders who collectively garnered 362 PRs.
Egan 2023.21 had something for everyone — short steep climbs, long steep climbs and a few “easy” climbs. There were reports of much suffering on the Blandor/Olive Tree segment. Isn’t that the whole point of Egan? For those of you who didn’t suffer on that aforementioned climb, you weren’t trying hard enough 😀
