C Ride

Alto Velo Saturday morning rides now start at Summit Bicycles on California Ave in Palo Alto.
Summit is Alto Velo's Sponsoring bike shop. Another big plus to the new start location, Terun, also a Alto Velo Sponsor, is just up the street with fabulous Italian food & attentive service.

On the C Ride (formerly known as the “Peet's Ride”) we enjoy a more moderate workout than the other Alto Velo rides (tho’ a workout it is). We practice group riding skills & communication in a supportive controlled paceline.

Start: Saturdays 9:00am from Summit Bicycles at 392 California Ave in Palo Alto, rolling at 9:15am, a few minutes after the B Ride departs

Pace: Double paceline when conditions allow, jamming as hard as you like on the climbs, sticking together otherwise. On most C Ride routes riders can skip the climbs, if desired, by waiting for the group at regroup points

Regroups: We regroup at the top and bottom of hills and recover after every climb

Example route: https://www.strava.com/routes/2977827685383107158 (click here to see more)

The C Ride is subject to Alto Velo's Ride Rules and all participants must sign an annual waiver.

New riders welcome!

If you’re a new rider or haven’t done a group ride before, there are many critical things that one needs to know about biking in general & about group biking in particular, some of them not so obvious. It's a good idea to learn these not-the-hard-way 😉.

See below for details of the next ride as well as past rides.

Alto Velo C Ride - April 5th, 2025 - Coastal Classic supported by Bicycle Law

Hi All

Spring feels like it has sprung today and it is expected to hold through the weekend. Let’s take a slightly longer ride and head over to the west side of the hills and do the Coastal Classic. Those of you that can stay to the end of the ride, Bicycle Law, will be sponsoring Coffee & Snacks at Manresa (T&C Palo Alto) following the ride.

Bicycle Law is one of our Supporting Sponsors. They are a law firm specializing in litigation on behalf of cyclists. If you are injured as a result of a hostile driver, hostile road design, or something else, Bicycle law may be able to help. Thanks to the work of the Bicycle Law team, both amateur and professional cyclists have received as much as six-figure settlements after crashes. Alto Velo is proud to partner with a firm that is not only helping individual cyclists, but also the greater cycling community by holding motorists accountable for their actions.

Alto Velo C Ride - March 22th, 2025 - Cat’s Hill Route (start in Los Gatos)

Hi All

This weekend we are making our annual ride to support AVRT @ Cat’s Hill. Weather looks to be decent and in the low 60s. The 8:30 am race has a couple of our participants, but starting later is when you will see the most AV riders. After the ride, we will have a tent on the course with snacks and refreshments. We hope you will hangout and support the team.

The plan is to start from Summit - Los Gatos at 10:00am and ride through Almaden Valley, New Almaden and climb up the back side of Hick Road. I have ridden some of these road but not all of them, but I have check with some people so we should be good. We can think of it as a true exploration ride.

Alto Velo C Ride - March 15th, 2025 - Simon Sojourn

Hi All

Weather can be unpredictable. Right now we are calling for good enough weather tomorrow (Saturday) so I have posted this Kings, Swett, 35 and Canada route. We will be heading through Stanford on our way back to get more views of the beautiful flowers that we saw last week.

However, should the weather be wet or Skyline look ‘ugly’, we can modify the route to stay low and still have a great time. It is the company that makes it great.

AV-C Ride March 1st - Los Altos Hills and Montebello

Hi All

Weather forecast looks good for the day, so we will head to the hills. This weekend’s route starts off with some warm-up climbs in the Los Altos Hills, and we’ll find our way to our regular Rancho San Antonio regroup spot, where there’s water and restrooms. The route simply gets back to Foothill Blvd, which will then connect to Montebello climb. For those not familiar with this climb, it starts out steep with a relatively flat portion past the school (1.6 mi), followed by more climbing (Montebello Climb 5.2mi). For those Gravel types, you can keep going at the top, and those familiar with the trails can find their way back to Backyard Brew (by PM or Alpine trail). At top, we can see if anyone needs a pitstop (Mt. Eden Rd Canyon Picnic Area), OR will will regroup at Stevens Creek Reservoir parking lot at the bottom. After our regroup, we will then proceed back on Foothill Blvd.

The forecast is for cooler temps, so you may need layers to strip off going up hill and to put back on for the downhill.

Alto Velo C Ride - Feb 8th, 2025 - Canada / Black Mountain Road / Crestview

Hi All

Saturday looks like cool temperatures but very sunny. We will avoid Skyline but still tackle 3 hills to give us some climbing (Black Mountain, Crestview and Edgewood). Generally this will take us out Canada and to the reservoir dam where we will head right down the hill to a steep left hand climb. Woodridge will met up with Black Mountain and we will track back to the dam. We will head down again to Polhemis and up to Crestview from the less steep side. Across the top we will go, and down the super fast descent into Edgewood. We will then turn right and up Edgewood back to Canada. For there it is mostly downhill through Atherton, Alameda and back through Stanford Campus.

Alto Velo B & C Ride - Feb 1st, 2025 - Rain Route Options

Hi All

As I am sure the majority of you know, it is supposed to start raining tomorrow (Friday) and Saturday morning looks to be the heaviest of the next 5-6 rain days. We need the water so I am not going to complain. And we have had some amazing sunny days where we have gotten good winter riding in.

We have decided to combine the B & C Rides for those hardy souls that want to brave the weather and ride.

If a ride leader doesn’t show up, please self organize and choose one of these 2 routes or self organize. I can neither confirm nor deny if I will be present at the ride.

Alto Velo C Ride - Jan 25th, 2025 - Huddard / Emerald Hills / Page Mill

Hi All

I think of this as a modified old school C Ride. We will tackle 3 hills (Huddard, Emerald and Page Mill) before returning to Stanford Mall and Shake Shack. At Shake Shack we will get free beverages and hang out under our tent.

On Saturday 1/25, we will be hosting our first Shack Track & Field event. The last Saturday of every month all of our group rides will end at the Stanford Shopping Center Shake Shack. All participants will get one free drink and can buy more food/drinks as they wish. We will have the club tent and bike rack there and have the outdoor space on the South side of the restaurant reserved for Alto Velo. You'll need to sign in with a Shake Shack representative and then you'll get a voucher for a free drink (lemonade, milkshakes, root beer, etc. up to $7).

Non - Members:
Alto Velo welcomes non-members to join us on our rides. However, non-members must have a Waiver on file with the club.

The AV C Ride offers a more moderate workout than the other Alto Velo rides (although a workout it is). Group riding skills & communication in a supportive controlled peloton are emphasized. When not on designated climbs, we aim to keep the group together.
