The Egan Ride is subject to Alto Velo's Ride Rules and all participants must sign an annual waiver.
Note: During the Egan off season, The Climbing Ride is held monthly on Sundays, starting at 9am at the Los Altos Chamber of Commerce. Egan 2025.10 - Top Performers
A brave 88 riders navigated the unrelenting staircase climb of Los Trancos, minding the precariously intertwined segments start and end points for a total of 487 PRs and 4 XOMs. This week the women’s group was 16 strong, making the route look deceptively easy as seen in the photo evidence below. Keep an eye out for the next edition!
Enzo Berghout was rider of the day with 8 PRs and 4 top 10s, as well as taking the top spot for the men’s GC. Jen Tavé was top of the women’s GC this week, taking 4 segments as #1 and 4 as #2 from the ride group!

Egan 2025.09 (May 6) - Top Performers
This week we had a whopping 112 riders reach the finish at the top of John Marthens Lane! Word of what a punishingly good way to spend a Tuesday evening Egan is is apparently out! As expected the Golden Oak complex delivered, producing 636 PRs and 3 XOMs.
Top of the women's GC was Jen Tave with 5 PRs and 1 XOM, while the men were lead by Enzo Berghout with 9 PRs claiming both the men's GC and Rider of the Day. Congrats to all riders on completing a tough set of segments!
Despite nearly voting their leader off the island for failing to mention one of the chaindropper uphill turns, the Women's group had record numbers (20+) and were treated to special limited edition Egan socks at the top of the last climb to round out their already stylish wardrobes. The group is growing larger and stronger, and most importantly has a growing list of "you just had to be there" jokes!

Welcome to The Afterparty (aka the party after the party)!
If we learned anything last week it’s that this crew knows how to throw a party! We aren’t sure whether it was the donut or the pizza or the double mora lap, but rumor has it that despite all the fanfare Simon may indeed be attending the occasional Egan in future months. While we eagerly await that day we have much riding to do! Despite last week’s dusky finish, the days are in fact getting longer giving us time to stretch our legs beyond the confines of Los Altos Hills. This week takes us on a tour of some of our old favorites in the Golden Oak Complex. After 9 segments of true type 2 fun we will end at the top of John Marthens Lane where the intrepid “gravel types” may choose to ride home through Arastradero.

Egan 2025.08 - Mora or Less an Au Revoir, Simon!
Annoucements: The Egan Stores are opened! Order your 2025 kit. Order your Egan socks! Join AV! 3rd AV winner for the $100 Eliel coupon on Tuesday at the top of Mora!
tl;dr: Mora was requested, more it is. Come say au revoir to Simon who has been banished to SF.
This week will be sending off our own Simon on an Egan Sabbatical, and so will visit his very favorite climb by request: Mora. Will he be riding the Brompton or the pink bike with a rubber ducky assistant on the handlebars? There’s only one way to find out and that’s by joining us on Tuesday for some good times on eleven lucky hills. While the hills are numerous, they are thankfully on the shorter side with the grand finale on Mora. Do all the hills for the GC rankings but also to learn which lucky Egan attendee gets this week’s $100 Eliel coupon at the top of our final hill.
Fear not if you cannot attend as Simon is merely moving to SF and is not lost to us forever, but merely on weekdays.

Despite having no pizza nor popsicles on the ride, we had a huge turnout. Pure heresy for one of the toughest Egan route! We had 104 riders more than last week. Actually, Christopher counted at least 117 riders with 746 PRs compared to 699 last week. The A group (54) and B group (63) were evenly balanced. Amongst the 9 fearless women attacking those challenging segments, Janene O joined the A group for the first time and wore her pink Egan socks, which gave her an unfair advantage to get PRs on Madonna, Wild Crest, Briones and Sirrup. We would not make any claim but we heard that you can gain 5-10 watts per socks as tested by the Egan engineering team.

Let’s talk about the route now…
Did you miss this popular route last year? Seize your chance on Tuesday to be delighted and dazzled. Egan riders! Get ready to tackle the 2025 Egan's 3 Body Problem route on Tuesday's hill climbing! This route will test your mettle for 32km of ups, downs, and enough elevation gain to make your legs question their life choices.
Inspired by the mind-boggling complexity of the 3 body problem, this route will have you feeling like you're navigating a cosmic dance of gravitational forces, with chaotic and stable areas challenging your cycling skills. Remember, just like those poor celestial bodies, hydration is key! Nobody wants to end up feeling like a dried-up yoga mat by the end of the ride.
For those who haven't indulged in the mind-bending saga of "The Three-Body Problem" series, do yourself a favor and check it out on Netflix or pick up the books. You'll thank us later for the cosmic inspiration!
In the spirit of intergalactic exploration (or at least neighborhood exploration), we challenge you to spice up your Strava profiles and IG post with themes inspired by the 3 body problem. Let's see who can come up with the most out-of-this-world script and profile picture! The winners will be featured on the Performance Report.

Egan 2025.06 - Top Performers
Rider of the day was Wil Gibb with all 10 PRs and 3 top 10s, also taking the top spot of the men’s GC! Top of the women’s GC was Rachel Hwang with 4 PRs, 2 top 10s, and 1 XOM!
What a turnout we had this week for the tour of LAH and banquet! We had 102 riders with 699 PRs and, in an unexpected turn of events, it looks like the A group was even larger than the B group this week - we may need to keep tuning until we find balance. I’ll also go ahead and assume that the turnout was a vote for the route maker’s perennial favorite, Blandor, and not for the SOM pizza. Noting this down for the future!
A great time was had by the women’s group who were 13 strong with several riders completing their first of many Egans to come. Lots of laughs and only a few choice words for the route planner’s propensity to slip in “hills that don’t count”. Watch out B group, we’re coming for you! If anyone is interested in joining the women’s leadership team let us know. Stay tuned for the next women’s start in the coming weeks!

Egan 2025.06 - LAH Coast to Coast
tl;dr: Women’s group and SOM pizza this week!
“One more segment! One more segment!” is what we would normally say. This week, however, we turn to Time on the Climb for an increase in intensity. We will have 10 segments again with roughly the same elevation gain, but the expected GC time has gone up by ~20% (based on total XOM time). We’re going on a coast-to-coast traversal of the Town of Los Altos Hills. We will start in the south, climbing the stairs of Mora and asking for more-of-a rest on Blandor. We’ll end near the northern border, climbing to the infamous 4 way intersection on La Cresta. Afterwards, we’ll convene at State of Mind in Los Altos for an early season banquet with a different kind of heat- and sweet pizza!
Announcements:
SOM Banquet: join after this week’s ride for festivities.

Egan 2025.03 - Top Performers
Phillip Maier was rider of the day with PRs on all 8 segments. Jen Tavé took top spot in the women’s GC as well as a QOM on Boronda View Sprint, while Matthew ! was the GC crown holder for the men.
With 120 riders and 390 PRs, the 3rd Egan of 2025 proved to be 20% <insert your favorite comparative adjective> than last week. The summer-like weather was no doubt a factor in increased ride attendance, although the B group was a bit too large compared to the A. The Egan leadership needs your help next time making sure the groups are more evenly divided, so we can prevent situations where many riders are crowded into small spaces.

Egan 2025.03- 20% more fun
Now at the equinox, we’re seeing the fastest increase in daily sunlight: a whole 17 more minutes per week! So, naturally, we’ll follow suit and add an extra 20% more climbing and 14% more segments than last week. Well, it’s 8 vs 7 segments, but who’s really counting? After some warm-ups in the lower hills of LAH, we will be visiting Vista Hill in Foothills Park, not once but twice.

The Climbing Ride,February 9th - Super Bohl(man) Sunday
Most of the U.S. will spend Sunday afternoon eating ultra-processed snacks while swilling down cheap beer while sprawled on the couch in front of a widescreen TV. If that’s your plan you can offset the damage by doing The Climbing Ride in the morning. If it’s not your plan, you can get that wonderful feeling of smug superiority that comes with real athletic accomplishment while others relax. If you want both but need to get home early, there’s a good bail-out point after we descend Bohlman.
(h/t Joshua for the ride title)
If you are not an Alto Velo member you will need to fill out your yearly waiver at https://www.bikereg.com/alto-velo-guest-waiver. And remember that 2025 is a whole new year…
To paraphrase Winston Churchill, "If you are going up hill, keep going".
Route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/36897978
40 Miles, 5151 ft.
Climbs of note: Eden, Pierce, Bohlman/Norton/Kittridge/Quickert, Wildcat Ridge, On Orbit, Apollo Heights, Bohlman, Canyon View, Stoneridge/Bank Mill/Hayfields/Lumbertown, Back side of Eden.
Ride Safety: Don’t be stupid. For additional ride safety rules, please visit https://www.altovelo.org/riding-etiquette
What: The Climbing Ride meets at the Los Altos Chamber of Commerce parking lot on semi-random Sundays at 09:10 and leaves at 09:15. We regroup and recover after every climb; if you can do OLH in under 25 minutes you should have no problem keeping up.
Where: Los Altos Chamber of Commerce. 321 University Ave, Los Altos, CA 94022
Why: Because you’re not like the others. You’re different.
How: Remember, pace yourself appropriately, there's lots of hills to climb! Pay attention to traffic and don't hog the road. Rides are 40-60 miles with 5000-7000 feet of climbing. The emphasis is on little-traveled hills with grades of ten to twenty percent. Riders are encouraged to wear garishly colored socks, and discouraged from vomiting in people’s driveways.
