Start: Tuesdays 6:00pm during daylight saving time at the Los Altos Chamber of Commerce, rolling at 6:05pm
Pace: Charge the hills, slow roll in between
Regroups: We regroup and recover after every climb; if you can climb Old La Honda in 25 minutes you should have no problem keeping up
Example route: https://www.strava.com/routes/2874856572963175602 (click here to see more)
The Egan Ride is subject to Alto Velo's Ride Rules and all participants must sign an annual waiver.
Note: During the Egan off season, The Climbing Ride is held monthly on Sundays, starting at 9am at the Los Altos Chamber of Commerce. Slightly longer than Egan, it features crazy steep hills in places like Los Gatos, Emerald Hills, and Hillsborough. To paraphrase Winston Churchill, "If you are going up hill, keep going".

Egan 2026.05 Announcement:
This week has 11 classic Egan segments, on a variation of the notorious “Three Body Problem” route from last year. We’ll start with some segments that are more often seen at the end of Egan: Madonna, Quinhill, and Summerhill, so bring fresh legs and your leadout squad. We’ll wander through Los Altos hills with some classic out and backs along the way before ending up at Page Mill road and the notorious Altamont Circle KOM. Finally we’ll hit up two more segments off Page Mill before ending up on the Moon (via Stirrup/Saddle of course).

Egan 2026.05 Announcement:
While it's hard to believe, we are indeed already one month into Egan 2026! Spring is in the air and the days and our rides are getting longer. If you haven't joined us yet this season you best come out ASAP before the long evenings of major vert and miles are upon us. This week marks the first time we have enough light to venture beyond Los Altos Hills. We will head over the Country Club area off of Pagemill for a route featuring 9 segments with a new final segment and a spiffy new section of pavement back to the start. We will also have our first women's ride of the season. This is a great opportunity to connect with other women riders in a relaxed and supportive setting - bring friends and newer riders!
As if we didn't have enough packed into this week already, we leave you with a sneak peak at our NEW EGAN KIT DESIGN. You will need to be a current AV club member to purchase the kit. Follow this link https://www.bikereg.com/altovelo to become a club member so you don't miss out! Watch out for a separate kit order email coming soon.

Egan 2026.04 - Extra Tribulation
Egan 2026.03 Results:
Egan feels like it is in full swing with our first Foothills Park finish. We had 97 riders total last week, including 16 women which is more than we had on any single week last year.
Leading the way as rider of the day was Marshall Miller with 8/8 PRs. Jason Saltzman took the top spot on the men’s GC and Jen Tavé took the top spot for the women’s GC a QOM on Via Ventana and two other top tens to add
https://route-viewer.vercel.app/results/egan-2026-03
Egan 2026.04 Announcement:
Foothill got me in the mood for another Egan classic, this time in the form of Mora Trail of Tribulation, but it felt like we didn’t have enough properly steep stuff last week so I added some extra tribulation on the way there. We will see 4 segments that average over 10% grade and many of the ones that seem friendlier on paper are actually flat starts or long finishes with the bulk of the climbing done in our Egan comfort zone around 15%.

The Climbing Ride January 18: Making Hay Out of Your Legs While the Sun Shines
It’s supposed to be warm this weekend so we’ll tackle what’s normally the coldest Climbing route of the year. Hopefully we won’t be freezing our extremities off, but I still expect it to be pretty chilly down in the forest on Star Hill & Native Sons. Temperature aside, this is the most scenic Climbing route, so clean your sunglasses and polish up your camera lens for some great views.

The Climbing Ride: Special Holiday Edition on the Wrong Day
By request of a very special guest I’ve done my best to suggest a climbing fest this coming Monday the 29th, 09:10 at the Los Altos CoC. I realize many of you will be suffering under the lash of your corporate overlords, but hopefully a few souls will be able to suffer my lash instead.
Of course this may all be for naught, given that I got together with out-of-town family for Xmas and thus have a 50% chance of being sick as a dog by Monday. Please check your email for updates, or YOLO and be prepared to ride without me.

The Climbing Ride: November 16th - Climbing, Coffee, and Cake
This week we will once again be combining the Climbing and Coffee & Cake rides. We’ll gather as usual at LA CoC (though at 9:00, not 9:10), mingle with Simon’s flatlanders, then make our way up the hills on the way south, meeting with the C&C folks in downtown Satatoga for sustenance and stimulants. Once everyone is full and rested we’ll go hit another couple of hills on the way back to Manresa for more calories.

Egan Banquet
Thank you all for another wonderful season! We’ll celebrate the same as last year by doing a short and sweet pre-party ride (no official leaderboards), then head to State of Mind (SOM) for some real heat and sweet pizza. The route should take about an hour, so we’ll plan on starting the banquet by 7:00PM. Feel free to join the ride or just show up at SOM for the banquet and start occupying the tables outside. We can only make a partial reservation for inside, so we need to start occupying the tables as we arrive.
This is the last change to pick-up your Egan socks on Tuesday night!
In case you are missing Egan this winter, be sure to keep an eye out for Dirk’s Climbing Ride, running on occasional Sunday’s through the off season. There, we’ll climb some longer hills and and attempt to answer the question: “Why is Dirk the way he is?”

Egan 2025.26 Ride Announcement
After Matt’s nonsensical 6% route last week, we can finally return to a true sprinter’s delight: the infamous Egan Grand Prix. With the days getting shorter, we’re closing in on the end of Egan season—the final ride of 2025 will be on 9/16. Until then, the routes will begin winding down in distance and complexity, but not in fun. This week we’re keeping the momentum rolling with a fast, punchy version of Egan GP: plenty of smooth, rapid segments for the sprinters, with a few short climbs sprinkled in to keep things spicy. Bring your speed, bring your legs—it’s Grand Prix time. 🏁

Egan 2025.25 Ride Announcement
It’s time to dust off the aero kit. This week we have a more accurate and honest version of the classic “5% Fun” from prior years: “6% Suffering”. This time, only one climb will violate the 6% claim, with most in the 4-5% range. This also means that 24% of the entire route by length is a segment this week (compare to 13% from last week)! GLHF

Egan 2025.23 - XL La Punition
Since two Egan Leaders will be MIA tomorrow (Michael and Matt — not that we’re naming names), you all deserve a treat: an XL edition of La Punition. We’ll sprinkle in some extra stealth segments if you misbehave on Tuesday, so consider yourselves warned. Yes, I am not kidding. Be sure to thank Michael and Matt for these “gifts” when they return. Tomorrow’s adventure: a field trip to Wayside, followed by a scenic cruise through Los Trancos. Expect some punchy climbs and a couple of longer segments — something for everyone.
I almost forgot… it is Jonathan’s birthday today. He will lead the EE Ride. Do not forget to sing happy birthday at the top of each climb!
