Egan 2023.20 - Top Performers

Rider of the day was Salvatore T. with PRs on all 12 segments! An additional shoutout for Greg McCullough for snatching up a KOM on the short (at least for Greg) but steep Baker Lane.

Another Egan down in the books! While relatively tame on paper, this ride sure delivered. The alternating long and short segments catered to climbers and sprinters alike and led to a surprisingly densely packed leaderboard. Rider of the day was Salvatore T. with PRs on all 12 segments! Egan 2023.19 Top Performers

Rider of the day was Alex Obrand with PRs on all 10 segments, 4 Top 10’s and 3 QOMs (both Ravensbury segments as well as Emeraldhill Lane)! An additional shoutout to Gavin Hlady for snatching up the coveted KOM on Altamont with the help of an impressive lead out from the field.

We had yet another successful Egan in the hills of Los Altos Hills (isn’t that redundant?) with 3 separate groups: the women led by Robin Betz, a faster A group led by Tanner DeVoe, and an almost-as-fast B group led by Jerome and Akin.

This week’s results omit a couple of segments: “Mora Glen Drive climb maximus” and “Black Mtn Rd”. The first of these segments was skipped by Robin’s group due to a GPS routing error, and the second one was skipped by the B group because it was getting late. Kudos to anyone who may have gotten a KOM/QOM or Top 10 on these segments, but we’re sorry it doesn’t count towards the overall GC.

Egan 2023.18 - Top Performers

Rider of the day was Daniel Blake with PRs on all 9 segments and a Top 10 on the “Alpine hill repeats” segment.

What a night! We had 62 riders, 281 PRs, and 3 KOMs on De Bell, St Francis (Greg McCullough) and Willowbrook (Gavin Hlady). “La Punition” was well deserved and we had a lot of fun with over 1060 meters of climbing Westridge, Wayside, Joaquin and Vista Verde. Congrats again to Gavin Hlady (P123) and Zach Berger (Open Novice) on the victory at the Pescadero Road Race. Thank you to all the Pescadero Race volunteers! This is what makes Egan and Alto Velo so special!

Egan 2023.17 Top Performers on and off the bike!

Robin Betz was women’s rider of the day with PRs on 8/9 hills, while Gavin Hlady was the men’s rider of the day with PRs on all 9 segments.

We had an excellent evening climbing the lesser traveled hills of Westridge! There was quite the turnout, prompting a split into A and B groups once again. Whether it was due to the mild temperature, fierce competition, or the impeccable route planning, there was a huge shift in XOM leader boards on Tuesday. Robin Betz was the first up every hill in the women’s category, capturing an amazing 8/9 PRs, 5 top 10s, and 2 Egan club QOMs! Gavin Hlady didn’t sweep every climb but certainly raked in the trophies including 9/9 PRs, 6 top 10s and 2 Egan club KOMs! Kudos to a number of other riders who also managed an impressive 8 or 9 PRs. Robin Betz and Gavin Hlady were GC top performers for their respective categories.

Sonia Martin was women’s rider of the day with PRs on 9/10 hills, while James Biddle was the men’s rider of the day with PRs on all 10 segments.

Another tour of some classic Egan climbs: complete! Kicking off the ride, we had a great showing for the women’s ride with 11 riders turning out despite the heat. Karen Brems beat the group up every single hill, while Sonia Martin was rider of the day with PRs on 9/10 hills! Following just behind, the A and B groups combined for the evening which perhaps provided some extra competition to break not just one but two XOMs! Congrats to Grant Miller and Greg McCullough for tying on the Esperanza KOM and Greg pulling in a second KOM on Bandera. Rider of the day was James Biddle with PRs on all 10 segments! Rider of the day was Colin Ovens with PRs on all 11 segments, a top 10, and 2nd place in the GC. The GC award this week goes to Matt Bierbaum (reports of results tampering are greatly exaggerated) while there were no women riders registered.

A smaller but hardy group joined the official Unofficial Thursday night Egan, allowing us to keep one combined field as we navigated twice up mighty Blandor. The pointy end of the ride was closely contested most of the night until Gabriel Lipkowitz gave an explosive performance on the second trip up Blandor, capturing a top 10.

Egan 2023.14 Top Performers

What an evening for an extended ride out to the hills of Saratoga and ending at the top of Mora Trail at the exact minute of sunset (8:33 PM). I regret to announce that we are officially past the peak Egan ride season and all the rides will be incrementally shorter from here on out…. I know you are all devastated by this reality, so here are the results you’ve been waiting for:

Rider of the day is Eugene Chan with PRs on all 13 segments, 4 top 10s, one PRIME, the sticker award and zero Club KOMs! The GC awards go to Yvonne Walbroehl and Yann. The good samaritan rider is Claude Luu, who helped out two riders with flats and the photographer of the evening goes to nikhil, who somehow was always able to get up the hills before us to snap some amazing photos.

Pro Tip: follow the Zen Turtle (aka Marco) on the Saratoga segments. He knows these hills better than anyone!

Effortless roll for Matt B. while George plans his attack!

The ladies of Egan making it look easy!

Eugen’s PRIME award with his cheat sheet for segment times. Is that legal? I cry FOUL!

Egan 2023.13 Top Performers

The Egan 2023 Death Ride edition did not disappoint. This classic route will be remembered for generations of Egan riders to come. The explosive route started with the 3 evil triplets (Deerfield, Madonna and Quinnhill) but we all got rewarded at the end with a magnificent fireworks of pastel colors at the top of Foothills Park. We climbed almost 1,200 meters (3,900 ft). The A group completed 15 segments whereas the B group had to cut one short due to lack of day light. We finished the ride with the last sun-rays of the day. We had 59 registered riders on Strava and 275 PRs.

In the B Group, we had at least 5 women who completed this arduous course. Whereas their male counterparts complained non-stop, the women gracefully accepted the challenge in front of them. One of them even walked her bike on Deerfield and Moody. At the end of the ride, I approached her and she said will get stronger next time!

Meanwhile, here is note from the spicy Group A: “Oofta! Our longest ride of the year had A group chanting kind words about the route maker at the end. Despite a bonus segment over B group (sorry, but not) and some mechanicals, group A was spicy all the way to sunset with a very close top 3.” Matt Bierbaum

Rider of the Day: Matt Larson

GC Top Performers: Sam Schneider (Men) and Jen Ji (Women)

This is a repeat from last year. Saddly, you will be utterly disappointed because I will not add surprise segments along the way. We will only do 1/4 of the Death Ride Elevation with some punchy back-to-back sprints along the way. My favorite one is definitly the puncheur combo, Madonna and Quinhill, a perfect Egan apéritif. If you plan to attend the Death Ride on July 15th, connect with us on Slack and join the 2023 Death Ride channel.

Make sure to take a lot of pictures at Foothill Park and tag us on IG at https://www.instagram.com/eganrideclub/

  • Important Note for Non Alto Velo members: If you are planning to attend Egan in 2022, please complete the online waiver at https://www.bikereg.com/alto-velo-guest-waiver-2023. Save your QR Code to confirm registration.

What: The Egan Ride used to meet at the Jr. High School, but now meets at the Los Altos Chamber of Commerce parking lot every Tuesday at 6:00 pm and leaves at 6:05. We regroup and recover after every climb; if you can do OLH in under 25 minutes you should have no trouble keeping up.
