Ride up a dead end road, gasp, squint at the view, do it again. And again. Lather, rinse, repeat, go home, swear at your legs, swear at the damn ride leader, question your sanity, pencil the next ride into your calendar. Ours is not to ask why.
Short route this week, so you’re expected to hit the hills hard from the start. The next day is a work day so it’s not like you’re saving your legs for anything.

At the top. The best part of this was the sportsmanship of the fastest riders (Matt, Justin and Tanner) who came down to support and lead the other riders who were still climbing.

Egan 2022 Season Recap
Dear friends,
It has been a busy season at Egan 2022. After a sad beginning with James’ sendoff to Australia, we kept the show going. We dodged many obstacles from fire, smoke, and extreme heat waves to a near mutiny. But at last, we completed an entire season of pain and suffering during the summer’s golden hour. We are grateful for this amazing cycling community.
Recap by the numbers:

Egan 2022.27 - Top Performers
Rider of the Day was Cam O’Reilly with 7 PRs, 2 Top 10s, and 2 KOMs. Dude looks fast standing still and I couldn’t even see him once he got moving.
Big turnout this week, maybe the largest of the year. I’m sure they all came to hear me bloviate; certainly not because it was the last chance for an Egan Ride in 2022. Seems like every fast rider in the AV orbit showed up to throw down — you know the competition was fierce when George & Steven don’t even make the top ten!

Egan 2022.27 - Last Rites with Dirk
Weep ye bitter tears, for the season of Eganing is coming to an end. To mark this solemn occasion the Leadership Cabal has asked me, a priest of the Elder Gods, to perform the last rites. This Tuesday I will be leading the traditional First and Last Route. It’s short, but that just means you can go harder on each segment; I expect to see many PRs and cups, and hopefully a few crowns. Come on down and get in one last fling before cold and darkness cover the land.
Do not despair, for there will be regular doses of gravity-assisted suffering in the off-season. I’ll be leading the bi-weekly Climbing Ride on alternate Sundays. Imagine an Egan route, but horribly stretched out; climbs several minutes long and comically steep. First ride will probably be October 2nd.
And don’t free up that Tuesday evening slot on your calendar just yet! Next week will be the traditional end-of-season banquet; details to follow.

Egan 2022.26 Top Performers
Rider of the Day was Whitman Kwok with 10 PRs out of 10 Segments. Congrats all!
This week we caught the tail end of the heat wave. Temperature at the start of the ride was 100F, but quickly dropped below 90F by the end of the ride. We were fortunate enough to be in the shadows of the sunset for most of the ride as the segments got longer/steeper as the ride went on. Thanks to Rhodes for calling out the water spout at the top of Magdalena. It was a well deserved rest stop before AND after Blandor Olive Tree.
Rider of the Day was Whitman Kwok with 10 PRs out of 10 Segments. Apparently he was the only one who kept his head ‘cool’ throughout the ride with his 3D printed KAV helmet. Congrats all!

Egan 2022.26 - Extreme Heat Advisory! Only 2 rides left.
Eganeers,
So far this season we’ve been blessed with near perfect weather; no rain, no smoke and very mild temperatures. It seems our good fortune has run out as this week is going to be hot, I mean very hot, like in the 100s. Please come prepared with hydration and whatever you need to ride in extreme heat. We will take it slow and extend regroup times as needed. We may also decide to cut the ride short if heat exhaustion becomes a concern. Again, the goal this week as it is every week is to finish the ride on your bike at the finish, well except for Dirk who gets to lie down at the end…. This week's route details as follows.

Rider of the Day was Luke Sonnet with 12 PRs out of 12 Segments. Sam Schneider, our Egan rider from Sacramento with an orange bike with gravel tires, took the Men GC. Amy Koop first time Egan rider took the Women GC. Congrats all!
Last Tuesday, we were chasing the sunset all the way to the top of Foothills Park where our exhausted faces were washed away with the last sun rays of the day. The countdown of the Egan Golden hour has started, click here to join Egan After Party on Slack. Le puncheur edition was packed with 12 short climbs. We had a total of 165 PRs. It was a big ring day and sandbagging on a small ring was not an option.

Egan 2022.25 - Le Puncheur - George’s Special Edition
Eganeers,
This week we are going to celebrate George’s Cat 3 upgrade. Since George likes to climb on a big ring, we will do only short sprints, but a lot of them! We will squeeze as many as time allows. It will easier so you do not have to “sandbag” your efforts on a small ring. Count as many climbs you do on a big rig and post it on your Strava feed. Extra bonus if you climb Horseshoe Ct on a big ring. Unfortunately, no time for stealth segments this week. Don’t forget to congratulate George when you see him!

Egan 2022.24 Top Performers
Greg McCullogh was the rider of the day who snagged the KOM on Madonna Way and took nine PRs, and two additional top ten finishes, great job Greg!
Great job by everyone last night, that was pretty tough! This was the first time this year that we used the five ways to the four way and I think the difficulty of that section was apparent. Extra kudos to George Wehner, Tanner Devoe, Otto Jolanki, Mike Kato and Jerome Sierra for taking part in the brutal University Road Race and still joining us for this tough Egan course. I think I saw a twinkle of extra suffering on all of their faces :) Despite that we had top ten finishes by a few of those individuals! While he didn’t complete the course, George Wehner snagged a KOM on O’Keefe Lane!
Special mention to Ben Stevens who rode across country on an older Specialized frame with downtube shifters and panniers, camping along the way just to ride with Egan! I didn’t find out what gearing he had, but it was definitely not Egan friendly.

Eganeers,
With the end of summer rapidly approaching, we need to do more with less. In this case we’ll do more climbing within less time and distance. In that spirit I managed to squeeze 12 climbs and 2500ft into 19 miles. We’ll be starting off with three tough ascents off of University and Border and then we’ll have a few more climbs on our way to the infamous 5 ways to the 4 way. Don’t miss it!

Whew, that was a scorcher! Thankfully the water break at Arastradero (and short gravel climb) kept us going for the 2nd half of the ride. Previous Egan ride leader Dirk Bergstrom took plenty of professional-quality photos us suffering on the ride. Below are a few of my favorites. Eganeers,
As the days get shorter, let’s make one more trip to the hills of Portola Valley. Based on our reconnaissance missions, the full route should take about 2 hours. It’s still probably a good idea to have some lights with you, just in case. See you Tuesday!
Egan Fan Alert! Don’t forget that Egan Riders and AVRT will be racing together as one team this Saturday at the University Road Race in Santa Cruz. It’s a hill climbing race perfectly suited for Egan riders. Join or cheer us up at UC Santa Cruz! We will go up and down this hill up to 15 times (ouch!). This hill is similar to the full Taaffe segment (similar gradient but 1/4 mile longer). We will need all your Egan love to survive this one! More info at https://www.bikereg.com/university-road-race. Egan 2022.22 Top Performers + University Road Race workout tomorrow
Few public service announcements first related to the few incidents with the cars on the Egan ride this week. We want everyone coming to the ride to have great fun so it is our best interests not to running into conflicts with drivers. Here are some good practices we should follow:
If there is someone passing the group on a climb where there isn't space, the call of 'car back' should have our riders pull over and ride single file. It isn't our legal obligation, but it will keep things safer. If it screws up the segment times people can request that we remove it from the results (its the least of our worries).
If possible do not engage any drivers in any negative way. Do not shout at or touch a driver's car. If someone in the group is getting heated by a driver's actions, any other nearby riders who are more calm should do their best to calm the riders first, then possibly calmly discuss the issue with the driver.
As that is out of the way, here is more info about AVRT collaboration for University Road Race! If you want to join the Egan Slack Channel about this upcoming race, email egan@altovelo.org and we will send you an official invite.
Join us for a University Road Race workout tomorrow, Friday 08/12 at 7:30am at Los Altos Chamber of Commerce. We will do repeats on Taaffe RVSP egan@altovelo.org

Egan 2022.22 (Tuesday 8/9, 6pm)
Eganeers,
Welcome to the 22nd Egan ride for 2022. If you come to recent Egan rides, you will not miss all the exciting news that our Eganeers are participating in many local races and often time winning! To get more people interested and involved in local race scene, this week’s theme is University Road Race simulation! If you don’t know, University Road Race is a local race in Santa Cruz, which has one of the simplest course while being the hardest on the race calendar. It either goes up or goes down, just like Egan Ride!
In order to get ready for such a hard race, we will focus on longer segments this week. Unlike the relentless nature of the real race, I put enough recovering between efforts so everyone can win. But if you want to take a shot at the real deal, you can sign-up for University Road Race here:
https://www.bikereg.com/university-road-race
See you all Tuesday! Remember to charge the hills and take it easy in between (especially on the downhills).

Egan 2022.21 Top Performers
Along with her other accolades, the rider of the day was Gina Yuan with a PR on every segment, seven cups and a QOM! Awesome job Gina!
We had a great ride last night, thanks to everyone for keeping it slow and safe between all of the climbs!
We had some great performances this weekend at the San Rafael Criterium! Gina took first place in P-3, Alex took third place in P-1-2-3 and Jack took first place in P-3. Not bothering to rest on their laurels, they came to Egan last night and pretty much crushed the field with Gina and Alex taking first and second among the women and Jack taking first for the men.
Hal took first place in the Bike Hut classic for an impressive third year in a row and was still out there with us last night.
And Justin Pane decided he hadn’t had enough pain on Tuesday after getting a skin biopsy, so he also came to Egan for a bit more suffering.
Other honorable mentions go out to Gavin, who took 5th in Men’s P-1-2 at the San Rafael Crit and Robin who had her third win in a row at the Bike Hut Classic. Come back for some more Egan fun soon!
