C Ride

Alto Velo Saturday morning rides now start at Summit Bicycles on California Ave in Palo Alto.
Summit is Alto Velo's Sponsoring bike shop. Another big plus to the new start location, Terun, also a Alto Velo Sponsor, is just up the street with fabulous Italian food & attentive service.

On the C Ride (formerly known as the “Peet's Ride”) we enjoy a more moderate workout than the other Alto Velo rides (tho’ a workout it is). We practice group riding skills & communication in a supportive controlled paceline.

Start: Saturdays 9:00am from Summit Bicycles at 392 California Ave in Palo Alto, rolling at 9:15am, a few minutes after the B Ride departs

Pace: Double paceline when conditions allow, jamming as hard as you like on the climbs, sticking together otherwise. On most C Ride routes riders can skip the climbs, if desired, by waiting for the group at regroup points

Regroups: We regroup at the top and bottom of hills and recover after every climb

Example route: https://www.strava.com/routes/2977827685383107158 (click here to see more)

The C Ride is subject to Alto Velo's Ride Rules and all participants must sign an annual waiver.

New riders welcome!

If you’re a new rider or haven’t done a group ride before, there are many critical things that one needs to know about biking in general & about group biking in particular, some of them not so obvious. It's a good idea to learn these not-the-hard-way 😉.

See below for details of the next ride as well as past rides.

Alto Velo C Ride Aug-12: Mid-Pen Magical Mystery Tour

Hi Peloton

Wow - that was a tough century ride in Marin. However, beautiful people and scenery. This week I though a beautiful tour of the roads of the mid-pen would be in order. There are no long climbs but there will be a few steep ones. There are some loops to avoid if tired or whatever as we typically try to provide on the C Ride. This is our best AV ride to start with the club.

Also checkout our report of the Marin Century at https://www.altovelo.org/blog. It should be loaded later today. We are also promoting our Social Club and have started a new IG account https://www.instagram.com/altovelosocial/. As we finish up the summer month and transition into more social rides, we hope to have you join us and our rides that encourage connection and camaraderie.

We are on a GROUP ride, so we have regroups at 84-Canada (short), Huddart Park (water), top of Kings Mt., Water Temple, and across from Shell station on Sand Hill.

Guess what? West 84 is open. Therefore let’s be the first ride to go down it and test out the light and one way traffic control. I have added a few backroads to start the ride and a nice trip through Woodside Glens to give us some variety.

8:30  - Departure from Summit Bicycles; 56 mile route

We encourage you to sign up for the Bike Hut Classic as we will be doing this segment on the ride, and Abundant Grace is one of the communities we are supporting through our club.

Additionally, there will be no B/C Ride on July 22. That is the day of our Pesky Road Race and you all should be volunteering for the event. Please head to this spreadsheet and sign up for a volunteer role.

Description:
Hello peloton. Because we did a great job on the Hwy 9 - Skyline - Page Mill loop, we will now take on Montebello. This is a challenging ascent and yet a forgiving route. As an out-and-back climb we can pick up riders on the way down for anyone who doesn’t arrive at the top by a certain cut-off time. A couple of good intermediate points are the school and Swiss Creek Lane. If you are ascending late (and as always!) - keep to the right of the center because some people may have started their descent. When descending take note of any cyclist ascending because there could be a car overtaking a cyclist around a blind curve.

Route highlights:  Los Altos Hills, Steven’s Canyon Road, Montebello Road, Foothill Expressway

Regroups: The first stationary regroup will be at the bathrooms in the Rancho San Antonio Open Space Preserve and the following regroup will be called out at every stop. At minimum, we will regroup at the end of each major ascent and descent (don’t rush your descents!) and use rolling regroups where needed.

Alto Velo C Ride June 10 2023

Hi Peloton

I thought we would head south this weekend. I struggled to find novelty and yet not make it too long, so I hope this loop works. There is an option to skip the last hill (Moody) and just meet back at coffee / tea. Major roads will be Foothill Expressway, Stevens Canyon, Mt. Eden, Pierce, Mt. Eden, Foothill, El Monte, Moody, Page Mill.

We will hopefully stay together until heading into Steven’s Canyon and then head up and stop at the end at the gate. We will then head back down Stevens Canyon Road up over Mt. Eden, Pierce and into Saratoga for a water break and the 2nd regroup. We will soft pedal the back streets of Saratoga until the base of Mt. Eden and then regroup at the reservoir dam parking lot. Next regroup will be at the top of Moody with the expectation we will stay together until Foothill College, and then we will head back via Page Mill.

AV C Ride for May 13 - Canada, Huddart, Little Alpine, Coffee

With simply perfect weather predicted for Saturday, let’s get some miles into those legs complimented by a modest amount of climbing.

On the longish stretches of mostly gentle rollers, we will keep a steady flow in our pace line. On the way back, the two climbs, Huddart(400’) & Little Alpine (500’), offer fun & scenic challenges. The only water stop is at mile 18; as it will be warmish & with 30 miles yet to go, do bring 2 water bottles.

Oh right, the coffee part…. The Club is hosting our monthly coffee/tea at Backyard Brew after the ride. All riders are welcome and encouraged to join us and the club will pay for 1 drink per member.

Alto Velo C Ride Apr 8 2023

Hi Peloton

This week is an eclectic mix of short hills, roads less traveled and a Church. We are scheduled to leave through Stanford Uni, and ride in front on Memorial Church. This quick ride by on the way out and the way home will be our nod to the Easter Holiday weekend. We will head up Alpine and then take some backroads of Portola Valley. We will throw in the standard climb of Huddard, and after that some non-standard climbs like Canada College, Carmel-in-Woodside, and the westside of Emerald Hills. Those hills are a nod to last week’s Tour of Flanders and the upcoming spring classics with their short steep hills. As always, we will end back for tea and coffee.

AV C Ride for March 18 - Canada, Huddart, Little Alpine

Yay, our recent turn of rideable weather is forecast to continue thru Saturday! So let’s get some miles into those legs, right.

As the Canada to Polhemus bike path is closed for the next few month, Saturday’s route is a mash up of some past routes. On the longish stretches with mostly gentle rollers, we will keep a steady flow in our pace line. Then you can challenge yourself on the two climbs, Huddart(400’) & Little Alpine (500’).
