C Ride
Alto Velo Saturday morning rides now start at Summit Bicycles on California Ave in Palo Alto.
Summit is Alto Velo's Sponsoring bike shop. Another big plus to the new start location, Terun, also a Alto Velo Sponsor, is just up the street with fabulous Italian food & attentive service.
On the C Ride (formerly known as the “Peet's Ride”) we enjoy a more moderate workout than the other Alto Velo rides (tho’ a workout it is). We practice group riding skills & communication in a supportive controlled paceline.
Start: Saturdays 9:00am from Summit Bicycles at 392 California Ave in Palo Alto, rolling at 9:15am, a few minutes after the B Ride departs
Pace: Double paceline when conditions allow, jamming as hard as you like on the climbs, sticking together otherwise. On most C Ride routes riders can skip the climbs, if desired, by waiting for the group at regroup points
Regroups: We regroup at the top and bottom of hills and recover after every climb
Example route: https://www.strava.com/routes/2977827685383107158 (click here to see more)
The C Ride is subject to Alto Velo's Ride Rules and all participants must sign an annual waiver.
New riders welcome!
If you’re a new rider or haven’t done a group ride before, there are many critical things that one needs to know about biking in general & about group biking in particular, some of them not so obvious. It's a good idea to learn these not-the-hard-way 😉.
Check out this blog post “How to avoid being that rider”: https://trainright.com/14-group-ride-etiquette-tips-avoid-guy-girl/
To improve your group riding skills, consider joining a skills clinic. Lorri Lown's road biking clinics have worked for many: https://savvybike.com/clinics-and-camps-new/
A simple bike fit might also make a huge difference to your comfort & safety on the bike. For instance, many riders don't feel comfortable riding “in the drops” of the handlebars. However, riding in the drops offers, by far, the most overall control & braking ease. Alto Velo sponsor Agile Physical Therapy offers bike fit assessments.
See below for details of the next ride as well as past rides.
AV C Ride for March 4 - Avoid the Rain Route
Hi Peloton,
After many looks at weather, it appears we are in for a wet weekend and specifically Saturday morning. At this moment, they are calling for a 86% chance of rain in Palo Alto at 10am, and 90% in Portola Valley with a Feels Like temperature of 41F. We have 2 options should the weather hold off, and I will post them below. As always, I will likely not show up if it is looking like rain or actively raining. I was there last week and it was great but the forecast was way better.
*** Finally, we are initiating 1st Saturday of the month post ride Coffee / Team Social after the ride. We will meet at Backyard Brew, and the club will pay for members coffee / tea. Another reason to be a member. If weather doesn’t cooperate we will push to next week. This is for both the B and C Rides.

AV C Ride for 2/11 - Avoid the Rain Route
Hi Peloton,
After many looks at weather and where it will hit, if we stay “low” in southern SM Country we could miss the morning rain which should end around 11am. Remember, this is forecast and not a science. I have based a route around this idea. Should the weather change we can change the route. I have plenty of ideas.
I grew up in CA so if it is too wet I will not show up, and instead ride on Sunday.
I will personally wait at all regroups so that if anybody should be OTB you all can be assured that somebody is waiting for you. This is meant to be a practice ride but we will allow people to hammer the hills, but let’s stay together on the “flats”. Please download the route if you wish.

AV C Ride for 2/4 - Carmel in Woodside?
Hi Peloton,
Hopefully you will agree. I have another route that tests some less traveled roads, and still provides stimulation and adventure. We will go through the Woodside Glen neighborhood that reminds me of Carmel, and take a different road up through Emerald Hills. Huddard is open again. We will finish with Alpine and a quick trip up Sausal (by my childhood house) and a screaming descent. All total it is a little longer than last week with just a ting more climbing. It is easy enough to skip any of the climbs if you wish.

AV C Ride for 1/28 - Danny’s Route
Hi Peloton,
This is Ed. I am proposing a route of variety and adventure. I know that Danny loves some of these roads in Emerald Hills, so I am calling it Danny’s Route. There are some steep roads on the route but nothing too long. I find that if you take them at a manageable pace and don’t hit them too hard, all hills are very doable. That is what I expect on Saturday.
I will personally wait at all regroups so that if anybody should be OTB, they can be assured that somebody is waiting for them. This is meant to be a practice ride but we will allow people to hammer the hills, but let’s stay together on the “flats”. Please download the route if you wish.

AV C Ride for 1/21 - Sawyer Camp Route
Hi,
On this Saturday’s AV C ride we’ll enjoy a modified Sawyer Camp Route. This is an excellent route for us to practice steady pace-lining as the miles roll by.
Starting Feb 1, PG&E is closing the bike path between Canada Rd & Polhemus for extended work. This will be one of your last chances to enjoy the path for quite a while.
Huddart Park is currently closed, so we will turn left at KIng’s & head directly to Woodside. We’ll consider climbing Alpine instead on the way back. Will evaluate during a Woodside regroup (replacing the Old General Store regroup). The details below & the route don’t reflect these changes.
AV C Ride - Sawyer Camp Route

Alto Velo C Ride Jan14’23
With rain again expected Saturday, the C Ride route will stay low during an out and back ride through the Polhemus + Crystal Springs loop. The Huddart Park + King’s Mountain Road loop will be skipped if the roads are significantly wet. If raining, this may have to be a volunteer-led or self-led ride.
Alto Velo C Ride Jan 7 ‘23
I’m on board to lead the C Ride this Saturday. I was looking forward to riding with everyone, but based on the weather forecast and current road conditions, I think it is wise to cancel for this week. I have a friend who had a massive branch fall on her while riding Foothill in similar conditions. That was years ago, but she still struggles from her injuries.
Hoping you can squeeze in a ride tomorrow during the break in the weather. I’ll be out on the roads on my hardtail mountain bike. Stay safe out there and I wish you a happy new year!

Alto Velo C Ride - Dec31’22
It seems as if the C Ride will be greeted by rain tomorrow. If actively raining, this may have to be a volunteer-led ride or a leaderless ride. If only the roads are wet we will probably ride a “rain route.”
Take care! Jeff.

Taking a lead from Jerry’s great thoughts, let’s try and stay in the sun as much as possible. All the hills are full sunlight.
There is intent when designing the ride to make sure we have a warm up and so I force us through some different streets / trails so we can look at scenery and slowly loosen / warm up. There is also intent this week to try and stay warm by minimizing the length of climbs / descents / regroups. Of course, I like my variety and so there is just a little of that.
The forecast for 9am in Palo Alto tomorrow is 42. Today is was 35 at 9am. Let’s keep warm. :-) I hope many can stay for a tea / coffee post ride and enjoy the holiday spirit.

No AV C Ride12/10
The forecast is 100% for rain & wind on Saturday morning, so there won’t be an AV C Ride this Saturday (12/10).
Perhaps a good opportunity for some bike maintenance. If you haven’t already, consider mounting a set of robust tires suitable for the season ahead.

This week’s C Ride is the direct opposite from last week. We are expecting rain and so we are doing the Rain Route. What is that, you say? That is the low route to avoid hills and likely areas of rain. We used to do it a lot before climate change. An additional fun aspect of this weekends ride is that we will start with the B Ride, but very much have our own ride.

Announcement
This week’s C Ride is very much an exploration ride. We will start with a few twist and turns through Stanford to keep us together, and then we will have a nice long warm up by traveling across Alameda to Emerald Hills. We will take some of the different roads through EH, and end up on the normal regroup at Jefferson / Canada. We are a constant user of Huddard so we will provide some variety by visiting the same roads but also take on some new roads. Westridge and Page Mill will provide our final climbs.
Let’s plan on stopping at Backyard Brew to get tea / coffee etc. after the ride and enjoy the holiday and nice weather.
