Egan 2023.04 Top Performers

Another chilly night, but that didn’t stop us from heating up the streets of Los Altos Hills! Did anyone catch the chatter we raised among the NextDoor oligarchs of Los Altos Hills? It’s a bit entertaining IMO.

This week, we split the group between ‘GC Achievers’ and ‘GC Believers.’ That seemed to go incident free, made regroups easier, and helped the overall ride operate more efficiently. A few notable observations include the front group could have benefited from a few more riders and the follow group could have kept to the right more to allow traffic (and riders) to pass freely on the left. We’ll keep tweaking the grouping structure and try new ideas as we go along. Your feedback on this matter is welcome and appreciated!

C Zinger was rider of the day with PRs on all 9 segments and claimed the men’s GC, while Karen Brems (in the follow group) snagged the women’s general classification. Julian Amblard also deserves recognition as the 3rd fastest overall and the fastest in the follow group. Awesome job folks!

Egan Ride 2023.04 — A little bit longer, a little bit steeper, a little bit harder, a little bit Country!

Egan Riders,

For the 4th episode of the season we’ll add one more segment to last week’s total making this one a little bit longer, a little bit steeper and a little bit harder as we ride up a little bit Country before hitting my three favorite segments near the PA Hills golf and country club.

Spring season is in full bloom and with all the local schools in session we are at peak attendance for the ride. Make sure to arrive early this week as we’ll make important announcements for splitting the ride between ‘GC Achievers’ and ‘GC Believers.’ If you’ve been in the top 20 GC category this season or you can easily post an OLH sub-20 today (not last season and not your best PR effort from years ago) then you’ll want to be in the GC Achievers group leaving earlier than the GC Believers group.

Egan 2023.03 Top Performers

Egan 2022.03 was another sufferfest with a picture-perfect finish in Foothills Park! While there were no incidents on the ride, the large number of riders on some of the shorter segments resulted in some crossing the yellow line, which is a no-no. For the purposes of ride safety, we might have to split up future rides into multiple groups.

Newcomer Nikhil Sharma was rider of the day with PRs on all 8 segments, while Robin Betz (again!) and George Wehner got the women and men’s general classifications, respectively. Awesome job, Nikhil, Robin and George!

Egan 2023.02 Top Performers

Thank you for joining the official Egan launch ride for 2023! Welcome baaaack to the endless pain cave!!! Darn cold weather, but the Egan spirit was definitely on fire. Even Greg Finley, who designed this route last year, made the trip from San Jose to join the fun. Now, the data you’ve been waiting for all day (we’re certain of that!).

Egan by the numbers:

• Total riders: 61 (per Strava) grossely underestimated. We would guess the total riders were more in the 70-80 range. Can someone count the number riders in the video below and report to the group next Tuesday? Special prize for the Eganeer who can count all the riders.

• Total number of pizzas consumed: 12. Like true Pirates, we took over the entire space at SOM without reservations! Thanks Alto Velo Board of Directors for sponsoring. Don’t forget to join AV this year here!

• Total calories burned: A lot

• Total calories consumed post-ride: More than a lot

Egan Ride 2023.02 — The Egan Official Launch is this Tuesday, April 4th at 6pm!

At last, the weather forecast looks clear for Tuesday! We will ride as usual starting at 6pm from the Los Altos Chamber of Commerce. We are starting this season with an environmental/sustainable/green (ESG) theme using recycled routes from last year in about the same order. 2023.02 was designed by Greg Finley who will be missed as part of the Egan Leadership Team this year. We’ll give this approach a try and see how it goes.

As this is the first official Egan launch, plan on joining us for pizza and libations after the ride at State of Mind at 101 North Plaza in the Los Altos Village.

Egan 2023.01 — Launch is this Thursday 03/30 at 6pm

The end of boredom is finally over! After multiple delayed launches due to crappy weather…we’ve decided to do a soft launch for Egan 2023 this Thursday 3/30 at 6pm. Yes, you read that correctly…this Thursday, NOT Tuesday.

We don’t take this decision lightly because it’s been a long Egan tradition to have the ride on Tuesday evenings. It’s also been a longer tradition to not have weekly atmospheric rivers, so this is our way of giving a collective middle finger to mother nature and demanding the restoration of dryer weather.

The Climbing Ride, December 11 - Questionable Decisions

The forecast for Sunday is extremely dicey, but this will be my last chance to lead a Climbing Ride until mid-January, so I’m at least going to schedule it. If it’s actively raining at 08:30 I’ll stay home; descending 15% grades in the wet is a fool’s game. I’m also going for the most conservative and close-to-home route, in case we get caught in the rain. So, uhh, with all that optimism in the air it’s sure to be a fun-fest.

The Climbing Ride, November 27 - Regrettable Choices

I had an unfortunate encounter with a slippery root on an MTB trail in Henry Cowell last week and thus was in no condition to lead a ride on the 20th. We’ll try again this weekend, on the assumption that I’ll refrain from pitching myself bodily onto the dirt between now and Sunday morning. Come on down and laugh at your own and other’s regrettable choices in recreation. Hauling your carcass up half a dozen absurd walls is a great way to work off excess turkey & stuffing.

The Climbing Ride, October 23 - More Pointless Suffering

Ride up a dead end road, gasp, squint at the view, do it again. And again. Lather, rinse, repeat, go home, swear at your legs, swear at the damn ride leader, question your sanity, pencil the next ride into your calendar. Ours is not to ask why.

Egan 2022 Season Recap

Dear friends,

It has been a busy season at Egan 2022. After a sad beginning with James’ sendoff to Australia, we kept the show going. We dodged many obstacles from fire, smoke, and extreme heat waves to a near mutiny. But at last, we completed an entire season of pain and suffering during the summer’s golden hour. • Average riders per week: 43. Most ever in one ride: 63 (underestimate, since not everyone has joined Egan on Strava)

• 1 surprise birthday party for Akin at Arastradero. Thanks to his wife Stacy for bringing a cake & their beloved whippets!

• 5 leaders (2 new leaders added: Akin and Steven)

Another use for our Egan jersey: bird shelter. Robin saved a bird that was later adopted!

Egan is officially over but those Egan rebels to do a make-up Egan the following week.
