C Ride

Alto Velo Saturday morning rides now start at Summit Bicycles on California Ave in Palo Alto.
Summit is Alto Velo's Sponsoring bike shop. Another big plus to the new start location, Terun, also a Alto Velo Sponsor, is just up the street with fabulous Italian food & attentive service.

On the C Ride (formerly known as the “Peet's Ride”) we enjoy a more moderate workout than the other Alto Velo rides (tho’ a workout it is). We practice group riding skills & communication in a supportive controlled paceline.

Start: Saturdays 9:00am from Summit Bicycles at 392 California Ave in Palo Alto, rolling at 9:15am, a few minutes after the B Ride departs

Pace: Double paceline when conditions allow, jamming as hard as you like on the climbs, sticking together otherwise. On most C Ride routes riders can skip the climbs, if desired, by waiting for the group at regroup points

Regroups: We regroup at the top and bottom of hills and recover after every climb

Example route: https://www.strava.com/routes/2977827685383107158 (click here to see more)

The C Ride is subject to Alto Velo's Ride Rules and all participants must sign an annual waiver.

New riders welcome!

If you’re a new rider or haven’t done a group ride before, there are many critical things that one needs to know about biking in general & about group biking in particular, some of them not so obvious. It's a good idea to learn these not-the-hard-way 😉.

See below for details of the next ride as well as past rides.

Alto Velo B/C Ride Dec - 30 - 23: Rain Route

Hi Peloton

Rain is forecast for Saturday, and we are out all ride leaders except me :-0. As such, we will propose a B/C combo ride for tomorrow. It will be the Rain Route. It is a naturally shorter route (38 mi), but has lots of route variability if so chosen.

If it is wet, which it is supposed to be, don’t wait for me but rather head out at 9:15am. Self organize and be kind. Rubber side down.

** Look for a Cake and Coffee ride for Monday with better weather.

The high speed descent into Edgewood and a quick jaunt up Jefferson will take us back to Canada. AV-C Ride Nov-18, 2023: Rain route, “Looks like rain”

Hi Peloton

The forecast has been steady predicting rain on Saturday, so be prepared.   We are doing the “Rain Route”, but with a modification.  The Rain Route is relatively flat to avoid long and steep downhills.  The route takes us to Sand Hill Rd and out to Canada, and then we will circle back by Bunker Hill Rd.  We typically take the Ralston bike path but are not sure when it will reopen.  The roads will be wet, so be cautious and ride safely.

* Update: Alto Velo C Ride Nov-11- 23: Return to Normal Start Location

Hi Peloton

I have received a note from the AV Board of Director that says we must start our C Ride from the Cal Ave. location of Summit Bikes. Therefore, we will keep the same route but leave from Summit at 9:15. We will take Bol Park Bike Path to get to Los Altos It will add about 4 flat miles onto the original proposed route. I apologize about the confusion.

Brief description

We are talking a route we have done before. We will head south out of Los Altos and proceed through Stevens Canyon and into Saratoga. We head south on Highway 9 and over Highway 17 to climb Shannon and Kennedy. We ride back to Los Gatos to pick up some water, and then head back to Los Altos and Peet’s for some warm or cold beverages, etc.

AV-C Ride October 28 2023 - Mora Moody

Hi Peloton

This week’s ride has some inspiration from Eagan with some classic AV-C segments. There are four climbs with the last two climbs with easy bail out spots. We will have a simple warm-up down Foothill Express Way, then we will climb up Mora. After Mora is the only spot where we might lose any one, so please review the map or load the route in your navigation device. After we get through the Los Altos maze, we will find our way to Moody. We will climb Moody, and in Foothill park, we will climb the hill from the back side. We will then head over to Woodside and eventually climb the Canada College hill. We will then head back to our start. with a social cool down after our last regroup on Sandhill across for the Shell station.

Hope you can make it!

Alto Velo C Ride Oct 21, 2023 - PV, Emerald Hills

Hi Peloton

This week’s ride is pretty straight forward except for a few Ed delights. I have started and ended each ride with ~5 miles of warm up and cool down. The point during those sections is to talk, enjoy some less traveled roads, and cool down.

Let’s head out to PV via a warm up around Stanford, and a straight route up Alpine. First Ed Stewart detour from there by my old elementary school and a very brief gravel section (completely flat). A couple hills and back to Portola Road. From there we head to Trip and the old Woodside Store before heading to Edgewood and a very standard climb up Jefferson. We will then head back to PV via Mountain Home, Portola and finish PV with the climb over Westridge. We will then head down Alpine, Sand Hill and warm down through Stanford University and back to Summit.

Alto Velo C Ride Sept -23 - 23: Deliverance, Montebello, Chaparral

Hi Peloton

I am quite proud of myself. I was able to create a explorative route after 4 days in Vegas for a conference. The AC has done me in so hopefully I can recover by Saturday.

Brief description

We will head south because PV is having a running race and so Alpine / Portola will be closed in the AM for a while. We will head through Steven’s Canyon and take on the shallow climb of Steven’s Canyon to the end. We will head back and then up 2 miles of Montebello to Montebello School. We turn around and have some rolling flat miles and then head up Moody until Chaparral. It starts paved and then turns to packed gravel. I have ridden it many times on my road bike so this part is very much the exploration part of the ride. We will then head down Black Mtn. and back to Summit.

*Please look at the route. Most is straight forward until Foothill College.
