B Ride

Alto Velo's B Ride peloton consists of former riders who have retired from racing, up-and-coming riders who enjoy a challenge and strong riders who enjoy camaraderie. Based on the principle of getting outdoors and seeing and doing some cool things, this ride is meant to be challenging but doable. Mostly a no-drop ride, we average 50 miles per ride.

Start: Saturdays 9:00am from Summit Bicycles at 392 California Ave in Palo Alto, rolling at 9:10am. New riders welcome!

Pace: Moderate and sometimes fast. If you're at the front early on, know the route and please look back to see that the group is together (three souls gasping for air is not considered a group). Paceline when possible, wait at the top of longer climbs

Regroups: We regroup at the top and bottom of hills and recover after every climb

Example route: https://www.strava.com/routes/4519225

The B Ride is subject to Alto Velo's Ride Rules and all participants must sign an annual waiver.

See below for details of the upcoming ride as well as past rides.

Peloton,

New starting location require new ride routes. Instead of going across 35 when we hit the top of Alpine we will go down Page Mill and Moody to Foothill. It will likely only be in the 60s heading up West Alpine so not too hot.

10/8/2022 - Montebello

Peloton,

Take a very close look at the loop. We are taking the route less traveled. I would recommend downloading the route to your device. As you know, I try to bring novelty to every Saturday ride, and this week is an extreme case. We are traveling south because this weekend is Day of the Horse in Woodside, and as such we are avoiding the possible conflict. I am bored with going back the same way from Saratoga, so the route is up Montebello in the back half of the ride. There has also been talk of riding up the dirt to Black Mtn and across to Page Mill for the adventurous.

9/24/2022 - OLH / WOLH/ 35 to Kings

Peloton,

Let’s head back to some of the routine hills and add in a new climb up to Skeggs Point via 35. That will pretty much end our climbing for the day. It will be a little shorter ride as we transition into the Fall season, and rest up for CX and other winter activities.

I will be recovering from my Covid vaccination shot on Friday night so I am hoping it will not impact my riding. We will see. :-)

9/17/2022 - Los Gatos (Shannon / Kennedy)

Peloton,

Have you looked at the forecast? There is rain forecast for Sunday and in Palo Alto the high is forecast for 70. As I sit here and write this at 8:45 am it is 59 degrees. That will mean a cool start to our ride on Saturday. It is a perfect opportunity to head south and not get too hot.

We will hit a number of hills, but each is shorter than our typical coastal hills. We are avoiding Portola Valley because of the Zotts to Tots Race on Alpine and Portola, and I am letting the chip seal settle for another week or so, although things are looking promising.

I would like to keep the ride to a neutral start into Stevens Canyon. We will have water regroups at Saratoga and Los Gatos.

8/13/2022 - 9/Skyline/84/Cervantes

Peloton,

Many requests to ride across Arastradero Road south last week, so I have included it this week. I suspect the ones heading south wanted a head start getting home and don’t want to join the rest of us for coffee. :-(

Note - After coming down 84 East, we head back through PV, and turn left on Westridge, but instead of going up Westridge, we head up Cervantes. It is not long, but it is steep enough for you all to feel it. At the top, we take a quick right and then left which is a steep descent (Golden Oak) where we regroup opposite Alpine Inn / Zots.

Finally, this is a group ride so I would like us to stay together until the bottom of Mt. Eden on our way out. That means the faster riders at the front may have to watch their watts carefully until that point, but I would like the chance for people to catch up, meet new people and enjoy the neutral roll out. Thank you.

This week is my least favorite climb. But, as you know, it is not about me so I have put it together since we haven’t climbed it this year.

3) We will finish the day with pizza at Terun. We have secured the back patio just for us, and once again, they are expecting us. Alto Velo will cover the cost of food, so please instead consider making a donation to support this worthy cause - https://tourdefox.michaeljfox.org/virtual/FrancoTerun. 6/25/22 - Pesky RR Loop and other options

Peloton,

Please take a close look at the note as there are some significant changes: Ride Start Location / End and 3 Loop Options.

We are only doing the Pesky Loop 1x per year as it is rather long. However, as a celebration of our successful race and giving back to our members, we will enjoy one loop of the course. I will not be taking it at race pace but rather party pace. Each rider is willing to see if they can break the KOM / QOM established on Haskins or Stage (2 climbs) but we will regroup at top of Haskins and at Stage / 84. We will see if we have enough takers and if we don’t then we can all head up West Alpine.

Start / End Location

Ada’s Cafe - Ada’s is a new sponsor this year, and one of the ways we are giving back to the community. Ada’s is a Palo Alto nonprofit established in 2008 to hire and train people with disabilities in a commercial food-service environment. Additionally, it is a woman’s owned business.

Routes

Pesky - 72.5 mi, 5890 ft

West Alpine - 53.9 mi, 5087 ft

West Alpine / Page Mill - 45.1 mi, 4546 ft

Time

Meet: 9 AM
