B Ride
Alto Velo's B Ride peloton consists of former riders who have retired from racing, up-and-coming riders who enjoy a challenge and strong riders who enjoy camaraderie. Based on the principle of getting outdoors and seeing and doing some cool things, this ride is meant to be challenging but doable. Mostly a no-drop ride, we average 50 miles per ride.
Start: Saturdays 9:00am from Summit Bicycles at 392 California Ave in Palo Alto, rolling at 9:10am. New riders welcome!
Pace: Moderate and sometimes fast. If you're at the front early on, know the route and please look back to see that the group is together (three souls gasping for air is not considered a group). Paceline when possible, wait at the top of longer climbs
Regroups: We regroup at the top and bottom of hills and recover after every climb
Example route: https://www.strava.com/routes/4519225
The B Ride is subject to Alto Velo's Ride Rules and all participants must sign an annual waiver.
See below for details of the upcoming ride as well as past rides.
9/10/2022 - Steve Esswein Classic
Peloton,
I am in the Sierra’s, and today socked in with smoke from the Mosquito Fire. If I had known, I would be home instead. However, Jeff Bennett has agreed to lead the B Ride for tomorrow. Tomorrow is also the picnic and so we are having a shorter route for last minute errands, and showers before the event.

8/27/2022 - Kings / West Alpine
Peloton,
Please put your light wheels on for Saturday’s ride. Jonathan has created a nice climbers route. Once again, please check your tires, and bring something to fix a flat. Additionally, be safe. Downhill Page Mill can be challenging (but easily doable), and we want absolute safety for the ride.
I will be leading the C Ride this week to cover for our typical leaders being unavailable.

8/20/2022 - Kings Loop
Peloton,
This week we have Simon Parton as our ride leader. I am out of town and will not be participating.
Simon has a great route for you that includes the climb of Kings, Swett, and a run up Polhemus. Chip seal doesn’t begin until September so these roads should be fine.
Final note: There have been a number of flats on the last few B Rides lead by Simon, and he is requesting that you double check to make sure you have a tube with you on Saturday.

8/13/2022 - 9/Skyline/84/Cervantes
Peloton,
Many requests to ride across Arastradero Road south last week, so I have included it this week. I suspect the ones heading south wanted a head start getting home and don’t want to join the rest of us for coffee. :-(
Note - After coming down 84 East, we head back through PV, and turn left on Westridge, but instead of going up Westridge, we head up Cervantes. It is not long, but it is steep enough for you all to feel it. At the top, we take a quick right and then left which is a steep descent (Golden Oak) where we regroup opposite Alpine Inn / Zots.
Finally, this is a group ride so I would like us to stay together until the bottom of Mt. Eden on our way out. That means the faster riders at the front may have to watch their watts carefully until that point, but I would like the chance for people to catch up, meet new people and enjoy the neutral roll out. Thank you.

8/6/2022 - Page Mill / West Alpine / WOLH
Peloton,
This week is my least favorite climb. But, as you know, it is not about me so I have put it together since we haven’t climbed it this year.
Please note the route we will take to get there (up Moody), and the fact that we will descend Alpine into La Honda. That is a very technical descent after the right turn, so let’s be careful. We will regroup after the climb and after the descent as always.

Peloton,
This week we will do a ride that I had not even thought about doing. I got feedback from some individuals and I incorporated that into our B Ride.
Bring a plastic bag or fanny pack to pick up your t-shirt from The Bike Hut. You probably also want to let them know that you are coming buy to pick up the t-shirt. If we are lucky, we may get there while the party is still ongoing and we can share in the cheer.

7/23/2022 - Coastal Classic
Peloton,
We have an incredible day lined up for us.
1) Final group attempt at The Bike Hut Classic. Please make sure you have signed up.
2) At the top of Tunitas, Moss + Wonder will be there with Ice Lollies. I have talked to them to let them know we are on our way.
3) We will finish the day with pizza at Terun. We have secured the back patio just for us, and once again, they are expecting us. Alto Velo will cover the cost of food, so please instead consider making a donation to support this worthy cause - https://tourdefox.michaeljfox.org/virtual/FrancoTerun. Kristjan (Terun Chef/partner) has been diagnosed with Parkinson Disease. He is doing a challenging for the Michael J Fox Foundation on Saturday August 27th and we are trying to raise as much money as possible.

Peloton,
Check out my reference to where we are going this week. Some of you may be able to guess the main point of the ride without looking at the route.
Next week we will be doing the Coastal Classic again. However, there is a spiff for all riders that return to the end. We will be offering pizza from Terun. This week we will do our first Coastal Classic of July. Our target for the month is at least 2 times up Tunitas and qualification for The Bike Hut Classic. Our goal is to have the team with the most participants so we can have a plaque hung in our honor inside the Bike Hut.
We have now posted the promotional video for this event on the website and you can move over to YouTube to watch it here. You will see our kit very well represented. Thank you Katheryn.

6/25/22 - Pesky RR Loop and other options
Peloton,
Please take a close look at the note as there are some significant changes: Ride Start Location / End and 3 Loop Options.
We are only doing the Pesky Loop 1x per year as it is rather long. However, as a celebration of our successful race and giving back to our members, we will enjoy one loop of the course. I will not be taking it at race pace but rather party pace. Each rider is willing to see if they can break the KOM / QOM established on Haskins or Stage (2 climbs) but we will regroup at top of Haskins and at Stage / 84. We will see if we have enough takers and if we don’t then we can all head up West Alpine.
Start / End Location
Ada’s Cafe - Ada’s is a new sponsor this year, and one of the ways we are giving back to the community. Ada’s is a Palo Alto nonprofit established in 2008 to hire and train people with disabilities in a commercial food-service environment. Additionally, it is a woman’s owned business.

6/11/22 - B Ride - Coastal Classic
Peloton,
I am out of town this weekend, and Jerry Leaugers has volunteered to lead. Please be respectful to his leadership.
Couple notes:
1) We will be doing the Coastal Classic a couple times in July as part of our 2022 Bike Hut Classic fundraiser. We are a contributing sponsor to this event, and are hoping to drive as much participation as possible.
2) Next Saturday, 6/18/22, will have NO B Ride. Every club member should be volunteering in some capacity for the Pesky RR and therefore be busy.

6/4/22 - B Ride - 9 / Black / Los Gatos
Peloton,
I had a HD crash, and it took me 2.5 days to get back. I am back but that is why the B Ride post is late-ish.
We are trying a new adventurous route that has 1.5mi of gravel, but most of you will recognize the roads.
Alto Velo B Ride will meet at Lincoln Park in Los Altos Saturday at 9:00.

5/29/22 - B Ride - Steve Esswein Classic Modified
Peloton,
I am back. Kind of. Still not feeling it completely but we will give it a try. I feel compelled to come back because of all the flats, mechanicals and an accident that occurred while I was gone. Please, no more of that.
We can focus on etiquette again on this ride which means over communicate. Talk about obstacles, point them out, don't overlap wheels and help out others.

4/30/22 - B Ride - Kings, Native Son, WOLH
Peloton,
I hope you enjoyed our Umunhum day. I was personally hoping for a better climb, but the rest of the day was really good.
This week we will do something different. A few rides ago somebody was asking about Star Hill past Swett, and so I have included an out and back on Star Hill but finishes down Native Son. The rest is straight forward with an original climb up Kings and the final climb up WOLH.

4/23/22 - B Ride - Mt Umunhum
Peloton,
It is time to put our small gears on our bikes and get ready for the climb of Mt. Umunhum. I have done this climb 2x, and the full climb from the left just over the Hicks Bridge to the tippy top and the Cube has taken 1:03+ and 1:07+. It is a hard climb that starts really steep so plan accordingly. I don't think I am in as good shape as last year so I hope I am not much slower. Last year we did the ride in early June and suffered from a lack of hydration so this year the weather should not be as hot and we also have Johnathan taking refreshments and food to the top for us!!
Attached is a profile of the climb with gradients, etc. I expect to see this on everybody's stem Saturday. :-)
