A Ride

The A rides are led by the Alto Velo Racing Team and feature a hard, consistent pace for 3-5 hours of riding. The Sunday A Ride is the most challenging ride offered by Alto Velo. The Saturday A Ride offers a pace between the Saturday B Ride and the Sunday A Ride and is focused on endurance. Most routes will include shorter options in case you want to join for the first part but have afternoon commitments or don't (yet!) have the fitness to hang in for the whole ride. These rides do not stop often, so two full bottles and plenty of snacks are highly recommended.

Start Point: Summit Bicycles at 392 California Ave in Palo Alto

Start Time:

  • Saturday A Ride: Meet at 9 a.m. Roll at 9:10 a.m.

  • Sunday A Ride:

    • October - May: Meet at 9 a.m. Roll at 9:10 a.m.

    • June - September: Meet at 8 a.m. Roll at 8:10 a.m.

Pace: Fast. Expect to climb Old La Honda in 21 minutes or less.

Regroups: Rarely. Highly recommended that you know the route and/or download to your head unit.

Example route: https://www.strava.com/routes/10975526

The A Rides are subject to Alto Velo's Ride Rules and all participants must sign an annual waiver.

Saturday A Ride 6/22 - Page Mill/Montevina/Bear Creek

Hello riders, we are going down to Lexington Reservoir again this week! We’ll start by climbing Page Mill and going left on Hwy 9, and after a quick water stop at Castle Rock we can enjoy a ripping descent on the rest of Skyline and Black Rd all the way down to the reservoir. Then we will turn left, climb Montevina, and come back down - don’t get too distracted by the spectacular views as the descent is a bit technical! If the fruit stand is where it usually is at the bottom of Bear Creek we can get some light refreshments, as there’s nowhere to get water until we get back to Los Gatos/Saratoga. From the top of Bear Creek we’ll go left on Summit and then enjoy a nice gentle descent down Old Santa Cruz Hwy before circling around the reservoir to the gravel trail back to Los Gatos. From there it’s just Toll Gate to Eden to Foothill and back home.

If you’re not already heat acclimated, this ride should do the trick as we are expecting high temperatures of 88F/31C on Saturday. Please bring two big bottles!! We’ll be doing around 3.0w/kg all day but with minimal stopping, so that we can ideally get all the big climbs out of the way before the heat reaches its peak at around 2pm.

See you there!

A Ride - Sunday 6/16 -Pescadero

This week we’ll head to Pescadero the long way with many opportunities to cut the ride short. The pace will be endurance. Riders can climb as hard as they like on main climbs including Kings, Haskins and West Alpine but we attempt to stay together for the rest of the route. We will regroup at top of main climbs.

We’ll do a “quick” water stop at Bike hut (mile 28) and a 20 min coffee/water stop in Pescadero (mile 47) after finishing the Bean Hollow loop.

A Ride - Sunday 6/9 - Pesky Recon

This week we’ll head to Pescadero to recon the RR course. We’ll complete the full lap twice, with the first being endurance pace to learn the course and the second time being at race pace. We’ll do a rolling regroup on 84 and then a full regroup at the top of Haskins, finally heading back up West Alpine to go home.

We’ll do a coffee/water stop during the first lap in Pescadero (Mile 32) to fill up on water and enjoy the nice weather before we take on the full course. If the group needs water the second time around we can make an additional, shorter stop.

This will be a long day out with lots of climbing and carbs burned, so make sure to bring your fuel and eat as we go! Even though this is a race recon, it’s not the day to leave your flat kit behind to get an extra 1.3s on the Haskins segment.

A Endurance - Saturday 6/8 - Pigeon Point

It's my birthday this week so what better way to ring it in than leading a ride?!

This is a chill extended coastal classic to Pigeon Point Lighthouse that'll help everyone taper into next weekend's Pescadero Road Race!

We'll ride a steady Z2 continuously until the lighthouse (mile 45/km 65), with a nice ~25min tempo up OLH, maybe a harder effort up Haskins, and an attempt at a paceline down to Pigeon Point via HWY1's sweet tailwind. After a quick group photo at the lighthouse, we'll take Gazos Creek back to Pescadero for water & food & artichoke bread.

Afterward, we'll do a gentle recon of Stage Road and skip the Bike Hut before climbing Tunitas via Lobitos Cutoff - hopefully the artichoke bread doesn't hurt us too much! After a gentle Kings descent, we'll roll to Alpine Inn or State of Mind for some post-ride pizza.

Summary: 90 miles / 8,000 feet: Summit Bicycles > OLH -> 84 -> Haskins -> Hwy1 South -> Pigeon Point for coastal Lighthouse vibes (quick stop) -> Gazos Creek/Cloverdale Road -> Pescadero (proper 20min stop) -> Stage Rd -> Tunitas via Lobitos Cutoff -> Kings Mtn Rd

AV-A ride - Pescadero

Temperatures are going up, which is a perfect time to hit the coast!

Let’s maintain a steady pace and stay together between the main climbs. Feel free to push your own pace on OLH and Haskins/W. Alpine Rd. We will regroup at the top of each climb.

The route will take us up OLH and down 84 to San Gregorio. Then, we’ll continue from Stage to Pescadero for a quick water/snack stop to refuel. We’ll continue to Hwy1 and turn into Gazos creek and Cloverdale Rd back to Pescadero Road. We’ll then continue on Pescadero Rd. and go over the Haskins bump to W. Alpine. Descend Page Mill back to Summit Bicycles.

The plan is to make a single stop at Pescadero, so please bring two large bottles and plenty of carbs (350g+). Hope to see you on Sunday!

AV A Ride 5/26/24 - SC Hills

The weather is supposed to be perfect on Sunday, so let’s get some great riding in!

Steady pace when we’re not on the 3 major climbs. Hwy 9, Jamison Creek, and Zayante are great places to have some fun and go a bit harder, we’ll regroup at the top of each climb, as well as after any fast descents that may break up the group. It’s a long ride, so I’ll be strict about not going too hard outside of the climbs.

It won’t be super hot, but we’ll be exposed some of the day and Zayante always feels way warmer than listed temp, so plan on bringing some extra electrolytes! As for carbs, I recommend around 450-550g.

Stops:

  1. A quick stop at mile ~15 at the intersection of Mt Eden Rd and Stevens Canyon to top off bottles if anyone is worried about making it to the fire station, else we roll through

  2. Mile 37: Jamison Creek Fire Station

  3. Mile 53: Felton Park and Gas Station

  4. Mile 72: Castle Rock Park

Saturday Endurance A Ride - 2024-05-25 - Name better climbs

On this week Saturday A ride, we will climb two of my favorite climbs in the area: Page Mill and Tunitas. People are welcome to go at their own pace on these two segments, and we will do a full regroup at the top. In between, we will keep the group together, keeping the pace at a consistent 2.5-3.5w/kg. Slow is smooth and smooth is fast, so I expect us to maintain an honorable speed while avoiding any random surges. Sections like Skyline, 84 and 92 are most fun in a group.

We will not have any major stop on the route other than quick water refills at Skylonda and the Bike Hut, so pack adequate food (at least 50g carbs/h, ideally more).

Hope to see you there on Saturday!

Sunday A Ride 5/19/24 - Page > 9 > 84

Have you been inspired by this year’s Giro d’Italia? This Sunday, the A Ride will do our own Giro through the Santa Cruz mountains. No rampas inhumanas in this one; we’ll be sticking to the smoothest climbs in the area. The goal for this one is to maintain a steady pace throughout the ride. We’ll first warm up by going up part of Page Mill, before heading down Foothill towards Highway 9 via Eden. We’ll then climb 9, take Skyline, descend West Alpine, climb back up on 84, and take Skyline to Kings. From there we’ll descend Kings and head back home. Plan for short regroupings on top of every climb, with a water stop at the fire station on 9.

The main cues for the route are Page > Altamont > Foothill > Eden > 9 > Skyline > West Alpine > 84 > Skyline > King > Sand Hill

Hope to see you there!

A Endurance Ride Saturday 5/18 - Pesky

The Saturday A-Endurance ride for May 18th will feature OLH, a loop of the Pescadero RR course, and West Alpine. I went to San Gregorio State beach last Friday and drove home via 84, and I was like damn, it’s so nice out here this time of year. Pescadero RR is one month away, so it’s the perfect time to do a recon. It’ll be in the low 60’s over Skyline this Saturday, but it’ll be sunny. We’ll stop in Pescadero for water and snacks and maybe for a hot sec at the San Gregorio General store if there’s live music. The pace will be Z2 (maybe a little z3) on the front, and join me for threshold intervals on OLH, West Alpine, and maybe Haskins or spin up and meet us at the top. I’m heavy, so Clark is probably gonna climb next to me in the big ring in zone 2.

Sunday A Ride 5/12/24 - Soda Springs > OSC > Skyline

You like soda? You like springs? That’s right. This SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY the plan is to head south through the flats of Cupertino, Los Gatos to ascend the all too underrated, underutilized climb that is Soda Springs. To me, this is a real ‘climber’s climb’ as it’s a perfectly steady (albeit steep) gradient of 8.4% for 5.32 miles. The peak elevation is just above 3000’ which makes it especially neat. It’s an out-n-back climb which means there is minimal traffic. Test your legs if you wish! This climb serves to be a true assessment of fitness. After Soda Springs, the plan is to weave through the Lexington Reservoir to meet Old Santa Cruz Highway. We will ascend OSC- Mt Charlie to get to the Skyline where we will bop and noodle through the “squiggly” section of Skyline. After that, we will descend back down Page Mill and call it a day. Please bring proper nutrition and water as this weekend is looking to be warm and there is minimal water/ food after Los Gatos.

Saturday A Ride May 11th, 2024: Pancakes, Alba and Zayante

This week the Saturday A Ride will head into the Santa Cruz mountains to enjoy the incredibly hot gorgeous weather. But first, we’ll start by climbing Page Mill and stopping at the Fire Station on Skyline for a pancake breakfast (bring $5 cash). Don’t overcook it as we’ll next head down to Boulder Creek and climb the incredibly scenic and not at all steep Alba Road. After descending Felton Empire we’ll climb Zayante and head back to Page Mill via Skyline. Pace will be endurance (~3 w/kg) on the rolling/downhill sections; feel free to go as hard as you want on the climbs but come back and ride with your teammates if you drop me reach the top first! We will not stop in Boulder Creek given the stop at the fire station, and we’ll do a quick stop in Felton (10 minutes). This is a long ride with lots of climbing so ensure you bring adequate food.

Sunday A Ride - 05/05/2024 - Pacifica > HW1 > West Alpine

The weather on Saturday is looking rough, but fortunately Sunday is unaffected and the show goes on.

My ideal A Ride is one where I only get dropped by a little bit, so I’ve put together a route that promotes this aspiration. We start with 70 miles of “flats”, riding north to Pacifica and coming back down the coast on Hwy 1. We’ll stop for water at the Devil’s Slide lookout, and continue south all the way to Pescadero. We’ll do a coffee stop at the Loma Mar Store, before climbing our way out over Haskins and West Alpine.

My intent is that the thought of climbing West Alpine after 75 miles will organically keep the pace reasonable up until then. We’ll be doing 2.5-3.5 W/kg and will regroup where necessary. After Loma Mar, the reigns are off and people can smash to their heart’s content, but I’ll be crawling up it.

The plan is to not stop for food until 67 miles in, so plan accordingly. If you’re short on time or fitness, there are multiple places to turn left from Hwy 1 and shorten the route up — Tunitas (74 mi), Hwy 84 (80 mi), or Hwy 84 after Haskins (still 93 miles but 700 ft less climbing). Also, this is the first weekend that we will be starting at 8am. It would be a shame to leave anybody.

Summary: 93 miles / 7,500 feet: Summit Bicycles > Cañada > Skyline > Pacifica > HW1 > More HW1 > Pescadero > Loma Mar > Haskins > West Alpine > Page Mill > Summit Bicycles

AV A Ride - 4/14/24 - Big Basin Greatest Hits

This A ride is an “A for Adventure” ride that is different from the typical A ride and aimed at a wider section of the club. We’ll do one of Robin’s favorite long Sunday routes, have good conversation, and an actual lunch stop. Climbs include Page Mill, Jamison Creek, and Zayante, with a total of ~105mi and 12k ft climbing, so bring your easy gears and a lot of food!

If you haven’t done a long ride with this much climbing before, this is a great place to start. If you have done a century before, or if you can do Pescadero loop with B-ride easily, you’re definitely welcome to join. There’s several places to bail out and make the day shorter if you don’t want to commit to 8+ hours moving time. Average speed over the entire ride will be 13.5-14.5 mph (typically A ride will average 16-17mph on this sort of route).

Bring lots of calories and two big bottles, as water stops are limited. We’ll stop at Wild Roots in Felton (mi 57) for a short lunch break, water, and bathrooms and Castle Rock (mi 77) for water and bathrooms, with other stops as the group needs but kept as short and efficient as possible.

It looks like the weather may be cloudy, overcast, and a bit drizzly, but not outright rainy. Dress warmly and bring layers - it’s a long day and you won’t want to rely on hammering all the hills to stay warm. If you’re planning on doing the whole day, bring a small front light just in case. If the weather is truly miserable the ride leader reserves the right to shorten the route.

If you have any questions about the ride, food, clothing, or if you’re up for it, feel free to message ride leader Robin on AV Slack or Strava. The more people that show up the more fun we can have on the downhills!

Route: https://www.strava.com/routes/3213538949323630798

Summary: Summit -> Page Mill -> Skyline -> Highway 9 -> 236 through Big Basin -> Jamison Creek -> Empire Grade -> Pine Flat -> Ice Cream Grade -> Felton Empire -> LUNCH -> Zayante -> Summit / Bear Creek -> Skyline -> 84

Longer description:

This ride can be thought of as two rides: “going to lunch,” and “going home.”

After the fast group drops us up Page Mill, we’ll regroup at the top with a SHORT bathroom stop for those that need it. We’ll climb ~25 more minutes to the top of Highway 9 (possible bail out down 9 back into town), filling our bottles at the fire station if necessary. After a fun descent down 9, we’ll climb through Big Basin (with a porta potty stop if needed). After climbing out of the park, we’ll “enjoy” almost 3 miles of 10% grade on Jamison Creek. The last bail-out route is continuing on 236 instead of climbing Jamison and returning via 9 or Bear Creek. Doing Jamison commits you to the full ride!

We’ll roll along the ridge line on Empire Grade, descend Pine Flat a bit, and be disappointed by the pavement on Ice Cream Grade (which should have amazing pavement based on its name). Try not to steal the ride leader’s QOM down Felton Empire - it’s one of the best descents around!

Lunch is at Wild Roots market in Felton, aka “even more overpriced Whole Foods.” In the interests of time please plan on getting food there. They have sandwiches, hot pasta bar, chips, drinks, etc, and the ride leader’s traditional long ride meal of sushi, peanut butter cups, and apple juice (don’t judge until you try it, but maybe don’t try it for the first time on this route). We’ll get to ride through a secret covered bridge to get water and a porta-potty stop at a park before starting the second half of the ride.

We’ll climb back to the ridge on Zayante, avoiding cars on the bottom section by taking the quieter W Zayante Rd. The road gets narrower and calmer as we climb, and with the exception of a few rude switchbacks is not too steep. A bit over an hour after lunch we’ll reach the end of this road, but there’s still 1000 more feet of climbing along Summit, Bear Creek, and Skyline which will take about another hour to finish.

After reaching Castle Rock state park, we’ll stop for water, bathrooms, and complaining about all the climbing we just did. It’s all downhill for the remaining 20+ miles though, and is super fun in a group. We’ll count down every single remaining tiny hill until the top of 84 where we’ll descend and head home or back to Summit.

Start: Summit Bicycles, Palo Alto

Time: Meet 9 AM, Leave 9:10 AM

Ride etiquette: https://www.altovelo.org/ride-rules

Additional etiquette - Robin will be riding the climbs at her conversational all-day pace of about 3-3.3 w/kg. That’s about a 52-55min Page Mill. You’re welcome to go faster and wait at the top, but keep in mind it is a very long day and you may regret it at miles 70-75. Riders who push the pace on the flats will be allowed to dangle off the front indefinitely.

Make sure your bike is in good working order - you don’t want your Di2 battery to die on Jamison!

AV-A ride 3/31 Steep climb, Race to Summit Store, Boulder Creek Hwy9

For the A-ride this Sunday, we will go up one of the steepest segment in the area (it’s aptly named) that brings us to On Orbit Dr. After regroup at the top of Bohlman, we will descend Montevina and enjoy the view around the Lexington Reservoir. We will race up Old Santa Cruz Hwy to Summit Store for a rest stop (whoever gets to the store first will get a drink/snack from me), then head back via skyline and descend Bear Creek to Boulder Creek for another quick stop. We will stay together as a group on Hwy9/skyline on our way back (<4.5 w/kg on the climb). Hope to see you there!

Reminder: The A-ride meets at Summit Bicycles on California Ave in Palo Alto at 9 am Sunday
